Ilse spent four consecutive nights on the quay at Sète with a set of absorbent strips, trying to isolate why a harbour smells nothing like the sea. The answer turned out to be rope, diesel and cold iron rather than water.

The material
The salt note is not a marine accord. It is a synthetic ambergris fraction layered under a trace of clary sage, which reads as brine on skin without the melon sweetness that ruins most aquatic fragrances.

On skin
It opens sharp and almost unfriendly, then softens over twenty minutes into driftwood and skin. It never becomes warm. That is deliberate — the hour it describes never becomes warm either.
