How it was made

01

The brief

Petrichor is a real, named compound produced by soil bacteria, and it is nearly impossible to reproduce because the effect is largely about humidity rather than molecules.

02

The material

The accord is built from geosmin at trace level — a few parts per million, because geosmin at any real concentration smells of mould. Around it sit wet slate mineral notes and a green fig leaf that suggests leaves rather than fruit.

03

On skin

Startling for the first minute: genuinely wet, genuinely mineral. It dries down into vetiver root and cedar and holds a damp quality throughout, which is the hardest part to achieve.

    It actually smells like rain

Everyone claims this and nobody delivers it. This one delivers it. Wore it through the wet season.

    Uncanny opening

The first minute is remarkable. Settles into something more ordinary but still very good.
